FAIRFIELD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL LEADERS MEET WITH LEGISLATORS IN SPRINGFIELD TO SHOWCASE ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP

On April 12th in Springfield Illinois, Fairfield Memorial Hospital participated in IHA’s 3rd Annual Quality Advocacy Showcase. The event was aimed to showcase the quality of Illinois hospitals’ improvement and advocacy on healthcare. This development was showcased by Illinois Health and Hospital Association (IHA) leaders.

Fairfield Memorial Hospital was among the 92 participating hospitals and health systems who met with Illinois State legislators to explain the improvements being made at the hospitals across Illinois.

The IHA’s showcase was an opportunity to address the ways our hospital has developed programs to improve patient outcomes. Some important key notes of this event was to share with the legislators how our hospital is trusted and reliable with their information on healthcare conditions and the staff being highly skilled and dedicated towards patient care.

Fairfield Memorial Hospital’s Quality Analyst Luke McDaniel was in attendance to showcase the priorities and improvements being made at the hospital. Mr. McDaniel met with State Representative David Reis and Senator Dale Righter to discuss FMH’s antimicrobial stewardship program.  During their discussions, he was able to showcase the results of this initiative that the hospital has undertaken to improve our patients’ health and well-being.

"It was a great opportunity to discuss with our representatives, the many efforts our hospital is making in patient safety and quality of care. I was happy to highlight our antimicrobial stewardship program and the positive results that we have discovered in such a short period of time." said Luke McDaniel, Quality Analyst.

According to the 2016 Antibiotic Resistance National Summary Data Report, more than 2 million illnesses and 23,000 deaths occur each year due to antibiotic resistance. In addition, 47 million unnecessary outpatient antibiotics are prescribed each year.

Antimicrobial stewardship can help prevent the development of multidrug resistant organisms, and reduce unnecessary drug use and costs associated with expensive, broad-spectrum therapies used to treat HAI’s.

“Patient safety has been and will continue to be a very important part of everything we do here at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Our multi-disciplinary team approach to antimicrobial stewardship means that each patient who is prescribed an antibiotic as an inpatient in our hospital or through our Rural Health Clinics is receiving the best possible treatment for their illness. Fairfield Memorial Hospital has the focus and understanding that these issues need to be addressed and have made it a priority in making change happen.” stated Katherine Bunting-Williams, CEO of Fairfield Memorial Hospital.
