SOUTH EAST ILLINOIS AHEC HOSTS SUMMER CAMP
South East Illinois Area Health Education Center (SEI-AHEC) in collaboration with SEIgrow, Fairfield Memorial Hospital and Frontier Community College recently held a one day rural health careers camp. The camp was based at Frontier Community College with additional activities located at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Thirty incoming freshmen and sophomore students from Wayne, Edwards, and Hamilton counties who have a budding interest in the health professions participated in the event.
The day began with students listening to a panel of health professional college students. The panelist included Adam Henson, M.D., who is in his first year of residency in Terre Haute, IN; Clay Walker, who will be a first year medical student this fall; Alex Lewis, Physical Therapy student, and Paige Hill, Occupational Therapy Student.
The camp gave high school students hands-on learning experiences throughout the day. During the morning hours, students performed mock procedures in the clinical simulation lab including IV therapy, TB testing, and resuscitation skills under the direction of FCC Nursing Instructor, Jessica Turner, CMSRN. The students learned about the importance of communication and field skills from FCC EMS Instructor Carrie Dagg and the Wayne County Ambulance Service showed the students the Advanced Life Support Unit. Nixie Hnetkovsky, FCC Anatomy Instructor, spoke to the students about the importance of a healthy respiratory system. She gave them the opportunity to view the internal organs of a fetal pig and see, feel, and exam healthy and diseased lungs.
In the afternoon, Beth Wilson, RN, BSN, SANE, SEI-AHEC Director, toured the students through Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Robyn Adcock, RT (R) (CT), Diagnostic Imaging Director, provided to opportunity to “read” some fun X-ray films of various objects and answered questions regarding the Diagnostic Imaging field. Jennifer Bowers, PT, FMH Therapy Services Director spoke about the many different types of therapies available and allowed the students to explore the tools used daily by therapists.
The day ended with students receiving information about education and training, academic requirements and financial aid from Jervaise McDaniel, FCC Associate Dean of Adult and Continuing Ed, Kelli Hill-Stover, Coordinator SEIgrow.
“Overall the students had a wonderful day of exploration thanks to the instructors from the FCC and FMH along with the panelists of health professional college students. This even could not have been a success without their support and the support of the local schools in assisting us in reaching the students who have an interest in healthcare,” stated Beth Wilson, RN, BSN, SANE, Director of SEI-AHEC
